About these PDF tools

What this collection is for

These pages are for the PDF jobs that do not need a server: joining a packet, pulling pages out, turning a scan around, stamping a watermark, or sending a smaller copy of a photograph-of-paper. The newer ones cover the next questions people ask after that. A form that is already an AcroForm can be filled and, if you want the answers locked in, flattened. A file can be given an open password. A file you can already open can have that password taken off again. The Info dictionary and the XMP packet can be read, edited, or stripped.

The signature tool is the one to read carefully. It puts ink on a page, from a drawing, a typed name, or an image, and the page says it is not a certified or qualified electronic signature. If a process asks for a certificate, this hub will not produce one.

Two ceilings are preselected: compress a PDF to 100 KB and to 200 KB. 1 KB is 1024 bytes. Lossless is tried first. If the file still does not fit, the pages become pictures and the text is no longer selectable.

OCR, editing text in place, redaction, and converting a PDF into an editable Word document are not here. Hosted suites still do those, and they upload the file to do it. The trade is written out on the Smallpdf alternative and iLovePDF alternative pages. If the only job is combining documents without an upload, start at merge PDFs without uploading.

Questions about the PDF tools

What runs locally, what a signature is, and what this hub still does not do.

Do these PDF tools upload the file?

No. Choosing a file hands the bytes to JavaScript in the tab. Merge, split, compress, sign, encrypt, unlock, metadata, and form filling all finish locally, and the download is a blob your browser saves. There is no account the document is filed under.

What can I do with a PDF here?

Thirteen tools: merge, split, reorder, rotate, compress, watermark, PDF to images, images to PDF, a visual signature, AES-256 password protection, unlock when you already know the password, an Info and XMP report with a strip option, and AcroForm filling with an optional flatten.

Is the signature a certified electronic signature?

No. Sign PDF draws, types, or places an image on one page. Readers that check certificates will not report a valid digital signature, because none was written. Use it when a visible mark is what the recipient asked for.

Can I remove a password from a PDF?

Only a password you already know, or owner restrictions on a file that already opens. Unlock PDF tries that one secret and stops. It does not guess. Merge and split both refuse a file that is still encrypted, and they point at that unlock step.

What do Smallpdf and iLovePDF still do that this hub does not?

OCR, in-place text editing, redaction, and PDF-to-Word with layout reconstruction are not available, and they are labelled that way on the comparison pages. Certified e-sign workflows are not available either. The comparisons are at Smallpdf alternative and iLovePDF alternative.

Will a hard refresh of a tool page 404?

No. Each tool is prerendered to its own HTML file, which is what a crawler and a reload both receive. The old /pdf-tools/tool-name URLs redirect to the flat ones.

I only need to combine two files without sending them anywhere. Where do I start?

The short version of that job is written up at Merge PDFs without uploading, and the tool itself is PDF Merge. If one of the files asks for a password, unlock it first.
