Compress an image to 20 KB
20 KB is 20,480 bytes. The compressor opens on that chip and writes JPEG unless you switch it to WebP. A noisy 1200 by 800 fixture had to be scaled down before it fit.

Every one of these runs entirely in your browser.
Fixture: 1200x800 deterministic noise, JPEG. Target 20.0 KB (20480 bytes). Output 19.9 KB (20387 bytes). The output was within the target. Pixels 900×600, scale 0.75, JPEG quality 0.134. 1 KB = 1024 bytes. These figures are the stored fixture run, not a prediction for a different file.
How to compress an image to 20 KB
- Select the picturePNG, JPEG, or WebP. HEIC is not decoded here.
- Leave 20 KB selectedThe ceiling is 20480 bytes. Transparency is painted onto white before encoding.
- Download and check the noteThe note reports the byte size, whether it landed under the ceiling, and any JPEG comment padding.
About this page
Scaling is part of hitting 20 KB
A detailed photograph often cannot reach 20480 bytes by lowering JPEG quality alone. This page's fixture is 1200 by 800 noise. The measured run scaled it. Your photo may stay full size if it is already simple, or shrink if it is not. The note names the outcome.
There is no HEIC decoder and no promise of a visually identical thumbnail. 20 KB is a small file for a camera photo.
Frequently asked questions
Will a phone photo stay sharp at 20 KB?
Usually not. The search lowers quality and then pixel dimensions until the file is at or under 20480 bytes. Fine detail goes first.
What does the padding note mean?
Only if you set a minimum and the JPEG would have been smaller than that floor. Comment bytes are added and counted in the note. The 20 KB fixture did not use a minimum.
